Gering, Nebraska: Scotts Bluff National Monument
Mountains in Nebraska?
Well, in a sense. The 500-foot bluff (actually, there is more than one) certainly does stand out in the otherwise flat Western Nebraska region. In fact, the National Monument has the only three tunnels for cars in the entire state.
Scotts Bluff was a landmark for those on the Oregon Trail, and the area does have replicas of covered wagons. But mostly, this is a good look at the sandstone and siltstone structure that is slowly eroding away.
There is a shuttle up to the top, so you don't have to drive the windy road. You can even shuttle up and then walk back down on a paved road, which sounded like a great idea on a nice day.
