Promontory, Utah: Thiokol Plant

There must be some other reason to visit Promontory, Utah, besides the Golden Spike. It turns out there is.

Thiokol Propulsion, one of the companies that builds rockets and engines, as a plant there. It's a fine place for testing, since there's not much to damage in case of an accident. You can't see much of the grounds of the defense contractor, of course, but it does have something of a "rocket park" in the front lawn. You can walk around and gawk at the size of the missiles, asking "How do they ever get them off the ground?" like everyone else.

If you are going to drive that way, you might as well see everything there.
