Amsterdam, Netherlands: Queen Wilhelmina Statue

Queen Wilhelmina was one of the Netherlands' great rulers. She served in the position from 1890 to 1948 before she voluntarily gave it up after 58 years. Wilhelmina took over as Queen at the age of 10, although she had plenty of help at the job until she turned 18.

She was around for World War I and II, and saw her country lose influence as a world economic power during her reign. But she is remembered fondly for inspiring her country during some dark days in World War II.

The statue is on Rokin Street and was dedicated in 1972. The idea was to show a young, vital Queen, as other statues in the country salute her in her more mature years.
