The Bamburg tourism site has an interesting way of discussing the man who did this piece of public art work. It refers to "disputed German artist Markus Lüpertz." It's tough to say if it means that Lupertz may or not be an artist in some places, or if his work is on the controversial side because it is a bit bizarre. Surely this doesn't look like any other statue of Apollo.
Lupertz was born in the Czech Republic in 1941, and he became known for looking at art in a slightly different way as his contemporaries. This one is near St. Elisabeth's Church in Bamburg.
