Frankfurt, Germany: Eschenheimer Turm

It didn't long to find this interesting old tower - we walked out of our hotel, took a left, went a half-block - and there it was.

It's the Eschenheimer Turm, and one of the city's most famous landmarks has an interesting history. The tower was part of the city gate that was built around 1427 - decades before Columbus, to put it one way. Most of the other towers in the complex were destroyed in the early 1800s, but this was remains high and mighty. It is 47 meters high and has eight levels.

A subway station is right below the structure, which is located in a pedestrian area. The lowest level is devoted to a bar and restaurant.
