Sometimes you get lucky.
Our trip through Germany put us in Frankfurt for three unscheduled days almost by accident. Water levels for our river cruises were dangerously low, so we had to find hotels at the last minute. Our knowledge of Frankfurt was virtually zero upon our arrival.
And then we were dazzled.
Frankfurt is an breathtaking combination of the old and the new, shown in this photograph. Zeil Hochaus is the name of the building in the background; be sure to blow it up to see the curve in the structure. The city was destroyed by the Allies at the end of World War II, and some rebuilding was done right away to restore some old charm.
But now it's the home of the European Central Bank, and a magnet for economic development. You can see the skyscraper in the background, and there are several others around the city. Think of it this way: It is playing New York while Berlin takes the role of Washington.
It will be interesting to see how Frankfurt handles this growth. It's not an easy assignment. But based on a few days, I'd bet on them succeeding.
Besides, Frankfurt knows how to have a good time, too. There are all sorts of festivals in this town, and the riverwalk area looks terrific.
We didn't get to see much of the city during our visit, as we were bused out of town to other attractions. Therefore, this video has as much interest to us as it might to you:
