Atlanta, Georgia: Dr. and Mrs. King's Tomb

Many people of a certain age remember the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 in Memphis. It took him a while to reach his final resting place in Atlanta.

In 1970, the body was moved to its current location more or less, although some of the buildings and structures surrounding it were not completed at that point. Wife Coretta died in 2006, and the tomb was only designed for one person at that point. So her body was buried elsewhere until an expanded tomb was finished.

As you'd expect, this one had to be done right. And it was. The tomb is surrounded by water, which comes down some steps on the east side of the pool near Freedom Hall, which is used for events. An eternal flame is located across the water. It was nice that a recording of Dr. King's speeches was played in the areas of the park near the water. Dr. King's birthplace is just down the street on Auburn Avenue.

Across the street is more of the King National Historical Park. Visitors can watch a movie about Dr. King's life, and then go through a relatively small exhibit containing artifacts and videos. It overlooks Peace Plaza.

It's all very moving. This is a better look at it all:
