Atlanta, Georgia: Ebenezer Baptist Church

When retracing the life of Martin Luther King Jr., the role of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta is front and center. His grandfather was a preacher there, and so was his father. In the 1960s, Dr. King joined his father as co-pastor.

It's quite wonderful, then, that this building is still intact. In fact, it has been restored to look like it was back in the 1960s. Visitors have to go upstairs to see the sanctuary, which is a little unexpected. They then hear Dr. King's voice ring out over the public address system, which is a nice touch. By the way, there is a small gift shop near the exit downstairs.

The "working" church actually is across the street, next to the National Park Service's Visitor Center.
