The main purpose of the building is to be a music hall. The main concert area seats almost 2,000 people, and hosts the Helsinki Philharmonic and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. I've read that the acoustics are first-rate in the building. It also serves as a learning center for musicians.
Helsinki's original concert home was damaged in World War II, and it took three decades to get a replacement. But that place's acoustics weren't said to be too good, and it didn't take long for talk to start about the need for a new facility. In 2011, after spending almost 200 million Euros, that wish was granted.
If you don't mind subtitles, you can look around.
