Kristiansund, Norway: Klippfiskkjerringa

Klippfish was the most important industry in Kristiansund for centuries, with the run finally coming to an end in the 1950s. Women played a big role in that business at the time, so the city designed to honor their participation in a very visible way.

Tore Bjorn Skjolsvik got to work designing something, and the finished product was debuted in 1992. The Queen was on hand for the ceremony, as were three workers from the good old days.

The woman has salmon in her hand after gathering them. The statue is on Christianson Pier, which traditionally has been a gathering place for those in the city.  This statue is near a similar monument; it's of a boy selling salmon.
