Svolvaer, Norway

Is this fisherman's wife waving hello or goodbye to her husband on the entrance to the Svolvaer harbor? I guess the answer is both, depending on your point of view. But it's an interesting part of this small town that is a center of activity in the region.

You can't mention Svolvaer without bring up cod - as in fishing. It's the major industry in the town. As you cruise into the place by water, you can see large numbers of cod racks drying out the latest catch. The other big industry in this part of the world is tourism, as this is a good launching point for the relatively unexplored areas of the region.

And even though it's above the Arctic Circle, the temperature is not too bad. The average high per month is always above freezing, peaking in July at almost 60 degrees.

It's a cute place - probably worth having someone wave hello to welcome you.
