Tromso, Norway: Holocaust Memorial

The effects of the Holocaust around World War II were felt in so many places in Europe. That includes Tromso, located well above the Arctic Circle.

A total of 17 people died at Nazi hands in the early 1940s. Most were sent straight to gas chambers after arriving at Auschwitz. Sixteen died in 1942, while the 17th was killed in 1945. They were part of the group of about 500 from North Norway, and also included in the largest deportation of Jews from Norway in World War II.

The monument is located at the center of town, not far from the main dock.
