Trondheim, Norway: Thomas Angell Monument

Here's a good news story that has gone on for more than 250 years.

Thomas Angell was your basic wealthy guy in the 1700s. This isn't too surprising, since he was the son of a wealthy merchant in Trondheim. He built up the family fortune with the help of brother Lorentz, and their interests included back of exporting, minerals and shipping. Thomas died in 1767.

Now comes the fun part. Angell set up a foundation to do good work in Trondheim upon his death. It's still in business. It's an enterprise that was set up before the American Revolution, and it's still around. That's a momument to honor Angell in the famous Nidaros Cathedral's yard.

The Foundation is located in the Thomas Angell House in Trondheim. The rest of the building is used for low-income housing for seniors.

You 'd have to say the man deserves to be remembered for all that. That's why he is commemorated in a church courtyard, and why it's fun to find out about such monuments.
