Budapest, Hungary: Istvan Tisa Monument

Here's a good-sized monument to Istvan Tisa that's located near the Parliament building in Budapest. Based on some of the reviews I've seen on line, some people still aren't too happy that he is being honored in such a public way ... more than 100 years after his death.

Isa was a millionaire who became a bureaucrat, and eventually served a couple of terms as the Prime Minster of Hungary. Along the way, he was against sharing power, against land reform, and against increasing voting rights. Oh, and he probably played a role in the start of World War I.

Other than that ...

Shortly before the end of the War, Tisa was assassinated on the day that Hungary dissolved the Austro-Hungarian Empire to become a solo act. Tisa was against the idea, by the way. The fourth time was a charm for assassins, by the way.

Sigmund Freud knew Tisa. After the assassination, he had this to say about the transfer of power: "I was certainly no adherent of the ancien régime, but it seems doubtful to me whether it is a sign of political shrewdness to beat to death the smartest of the many counts [Tisza] and to make the stupidest one [Mihály Károlyi] president."
