Budapest, Hungary: National Martyrs' Memorial

The interesting part of this monument is that there is a big gap in its history.

Hungary had to deal with the so-called Red Terror of Communism in 1919, and about 500 people died. A statue went up to honor the victims in 1934, and it stayed there for more than a decade. Alas, it was destroyed in 1945. No doubt the Soviet forces didn't appreciate the gesture.

However, after the Communists departed in 1989, a movement began in Hungary to restore the statues that were on display in 1944. So the old Martyrs' Memorial was reconstructed, and it returned in 2019. There was some argument about its placement, etc. But it is there, by the Parliament building, and probably not going anywhere for a while.
