Edinburgh, Scotland: Scott Monument

Sometimes being Number Two isn't so bad.

This is the Walter Scott Monument, the second-biggest such tribute to a writer in the world. Number One is in Havana, in the form of a tribute to Jose Marti. Scott has been mentioned on this blog before, but it's worth repeating that he was a master of both fiction and nonfiction.

The tower shown here is just a touch more than 200 feet high. If you decide to climb it, there are breaks in the spiral staircases along the way that have viewing platforms for a good look at Edinburgh. Scott died in 1832, the foundation for the monument was placed in 1840, and it was finished in 1846.

There are 68 statues on the monument, as many others including writers are saluted as well. Oddly, four of them can't be seen from the ground. Scott is shown holding his trusty dog, Maida - who oddly enough has his own Wikipedia entry.

It might take a drone to get the hang of this monument.
