Edinburgh, Scotland: Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh

Welcome to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. There aren't many better places to be in Scotland on a spring day than here.

The Garden dates back to 1670, when it was created in St. Anne's Yard near the Holyrood Palace. That makes it the second-oldest such garden in the United Kingdom, behind the one at Oxford. It soon outgrew its surroundings and moved to the Palace in 1695. The facility moved again in 1820 to its present location, and has grown to a 70-acre layout located between the waterfront and City Centre.

There are about 273,000 plants here, covering more than 13,000 species. It has become a center for research, conservation and education into the world of plants; it has a huge library to help that work.
