Ings, England: Lakeland Farm

As tourist attractions go, this is on the unusual side. After all, how many times do people get to visit a sheep farm?

Lakeland Farm is exactly that. And it's plenty of fun.

Visitors get ready for the experience simply by driving around Lake Country in Northern England. Most of the land seems to be occupied by sheep, as they are scattered in fenced-in fields around the countryside. So to see them gathered together is fun on its own.

The owners of Lakeland Farm start the program in a display area with seating on almost all sides. A variety of animals are brought in for closer inspection for the audience. Then everyone goes outside, and the sheepdogs get a chance to show what they can do ... which they obviously love. Upon a signal from the owner, the dogs go running out into the fields and herd the sheep together while bringing them back to the complex. It's not something you see everyday, and it's fun to watch. In the photo above, the dogs are bringing home the last few stragglers.

There is a cafe on the complex, and you can pick up some meat to go as well. A visit is educational as well as enjoyable - a nice change of pace in tone from the rest of our tour of the British Isles.
