Bonavista, Newfoundland: Ryan Premises

You can tell a lot about a community and a country about what it honors and preserves. The Ryan Premises is a great example of that. 

Canada has made this complex - and that's the right word - a National Historic Site. That might not go over so well in America, but you really can't tell the history of this region without getting into the fishing industry. So here we are. 

This consists of the owner's house - the Ryans - a carriage shop, and various stores. Obviously, once upon a time this was a thriving business. It opened way back in 1857. James Ryan Ltd. got out of the fishing business in 1952, and stuck to running a general store there until 1978. It took less than 10 years from there to become a museum, and Parks Canada opened it on the 500th anniversary of John Cabot's arrival to the region (1997). The Queen even turned up to do the honors. 

It's a nice little place that won't take long to see, and you'll learn something - including how to cut up a cod. (They use a stuffed animal with velcro to recreate the process.)
