Melbourne, Australia: Eureka Tower

Say, that's one big ruler.

The Eureka Tower checks in at 975 feet, which is quite impressive. It should be noted that you can only go up to 959 feet to be in the top floor, and the observatory (88th floor, please) is at 935 feet. That's probably high enough for most.

The interesting part of the building is that it is residential in nature. There are 500 apartments in the place, with 13 elevators moving people up and down.

This is said to be a tribute to the Eureka Rebellion, which took place back in 1854. A gold rush in that era took place that brought a lot of people and dollars to the area. You can see the gold coloring on top. That's a tribute to the era.

Construction started in 2002, and it was finished in 2006. At that point, it was the tallest residential building in the world. I'll bet the superintendent was quite busy most of the time. The top floor is the Eureka Skydeck 88, and it's the tallest observation point in the Southern Hemisphere. (You may notice that there are a lot of "best in the Southern Hemisphere" in Australia.)

Of course you want to see more.
