The State Library Victoria was established in 1854, and it made some history. It's the oldest such facility in the country and one of the first free libraries of the world.
Architect Joseph Reed was handed the job of designing the building, which also is part-museum and part gallery. Apparently they liked what he did. He or his successors at this company did the work on the expansion projects as well. The facility has been on the same spot in downtown Melbourne since the opening.
As you'd expect, the library is quite a focal point for activity in Melbourne; that fits the busiest library in the country (and third busiest on the planet). Ever better, the front lawn is quite welcoming. Many workers have lunch there each day.
I didn't get to go inside - not enough time - but you can.
