The Immigration Museum is located in the Custom House building right in the middle of downtown. The building was completed in 1876. By the end of World War II, the site was considered a prime spot for commercial development, but it dodged a bullet and lived to serve another day. It was decided to turn the place into a museum late in the 20th century. It's still around now.
The facility has gotten some very good reviews from visitors. Organizers have tried hard to make the building inclusive and tell a complete story about immigration. That keeps it relevant today.
