Melbourne, Australia: The National Gallery of Victoria

It's an unusual museum in which everyone wants to see the roof. The National Gallery of Victoria, shortened to the NGV by many, qualifies.

This is the oldest art museum in the country, and certainly ranks as one of the nicest. It was created in 1861, as the Melbourne area had gone through something of a financial boom in previous yeas and wanted to show off a bit. It's grown ever since, taking over a couple of other buildings and going through a variety of renovations along the way. There are 76,000 works in the museum's collections.

And here's some good news. While the special exhibits carry a charge for entry, the main part of the building is free to enter. Want to see a Monet? There is one here.

In addition, you can walk in and see the ceiling for free. A glass-stained structure stands at the top of the Great Hall in the building, and it's the largest suspended stained-glass ceiling on the planet. Not sure how much competition there is for that title, but it is quite striking and beautiful,  You can lie down on the furniture and stare for a while; or you can just plop down on the floor. No one will bother you.

According to reports, the place can be crowded ... but it still seems like a worthwhile stop. Perhaps entry in the morning is the best bet.

The video tour may be a little long for some, but it's also free. Stay as long as you want.
