Melbourne, Australia: St. Paul's Cathedral

In a city with so many skyscrapers around, the small structures stand out a bit in their own way. As you might expect, some of them are churches. That's the case for St. Paul's Cathedral, the home of the Anglican Church in Melbourne and the surrounding area. (That distinction has been helped by a limit on the size of certain buildings in the area, so this cathedral isn't too dwarfed.)

The facility was constructed in 1891. However, the distinctive spires went up more than 30 years later. The cathedral  is located by the Flinders Street Station, which has been an important transportation hub for the city for several years. It also overlooks Federation Square, the unofficial center of the city. Its position near the Yarra River in town gives it a presence in the neighborhood.

As you'd expect, the cathedral has gone through all sorts of renovations over the years. It took seven years to do it recently, but it came out pretty well.
