Scientists think that the fort was first built early in the 1000s. However, the first public record of it comes from 1301, when the city council approved a commander for the area.
The origin story is a good one. The Venetians wanted to build a fort on that spot near the city. If they had succeeded, they probably would have won control. But it took some time to get ready for the construction job, and the residents of Dubrovnik went to work on a fort as fast as they could. A few months later, the foreigners turned up with building supplies, and were greeted by a finished fortress and some natives telling them to go home. It all changed the region's history.
"Dubrovnik's Gibraltar" was a sturdy bit of construction. You can still visit it if you are in good condition. The walk up the stairs can be spotted in the photo, and it's not that easy. But it's worth it. The views are great, and the chance to walk around the facility shouldn't be missed. There are even some leftover cannons facing out in case Venice gets frisky again.
