Dubrovnik, Croatia: Maritime Museum

You'd expect an old city located on the water to have some sort of museum devoted to maritime items. This is that showcase, and it might be worth the price of admission just to enter the building. You can see the ceiling in the photo. It is located on the first two floors of Fort St. John, which used to have the job of guarding the entrance to the port. Work on that project started in 1346, and today's apperance dates back to the 1600s.

Dubrovnik has a pretty rich history in this area, as you might expect, and there are quite a few objects and displays placed in the museum that could be of interest. There are maps, ship equipment, navigational tools, and paintings of battles. It's all placed in a dramatic setting, as the high ceilings add to the drama of the story.

The museum's staff has done a great deal of scholarship work into the subject. You probably didn't know that Dubrovnik had one of the largest fleets in the world in the 1600s.

There's only one problem with all of this: It's a little tough to find the entrance. The signage isn't as good as it should be, so we wasted some time looking for the front door. So ... make sure you know where you are going.
