Saranda, Albania

Can we talk here? Saranda, Albania, is still a town in transition as the country leaves the Communist days behind. 

The idea is to turn the place into a stop for tourists, especially for cruise ships. The waterfront looks quite good, and some new hotels appear to have all the modern conveniences. There are said to be 300 sunny days per year, which is great if you want to spent time on the beach. But the development is decidedly uneven. A brand-new structure might be next to an abandoned building, or rubble. 

The streets of the city are quite narrow; a salute should go to the bus drivers and workers who navigate those roads. All of the one-way streets probably are needed, but it makes for some interesting driving patterns. The population of the town is about 20,000, so it's going to take some money to build up the infrastructure before it can grow into a major tourist center. They have improved the port facilities, which is a good start.
