Zagreb, Croatia: Museum of Naive Art

Sometimes tourists learn a lot while traveling. The Museum of Naive Art begs the question, what the heck is Naive Art?

You might guess the answer. It's artists who are essentially self-taught, and don't rely on a great many conventions. That can make the works seem almost child-like, with bright colors and objects that aren't quite in the proper proposition. In America, the most well-known artist of this type probably is Grandma Moses. One of the best things about is that no one makes the rules for everyone; you're on your own.

The Museum of Naive Art was opened in 1952 in Zagreb - the first such facility in the world. The name at the time was the Peasant Art Gallery, which seems a little harsh. Then it became the Gallery of Primitive Art, which is a little better. Finally, the current title was put into effect in 1994. There are 1,900 works on display.

It helps to see a few samples before making a judgment walking through the front door. This video will fill in some colors.
