Bamberg, Germany

Bamberg isn't a particularly big city (about 70,000 people), but it does know how to make something of an entrance - at least to its old city.

We walked across the Lower Bridge across the Regnitz, and were greeted by several statues. This one is of St. Cunigunde, who is from Luxembourg. Her husband, Henry II, was crowned King of the Holy Roman Empire in 1002. By the way, their marriage was said to be strictly platonic. Cunigunde was highly regarded throughout Europe, known for her generosity. She eventually became a Saint. I'm not sure what the building is, but it's sure pretty.

Bamberg was built on seven hills, thus giving it something of a connection with Rome. The Main river connects to the Regnitz here, giving it some strategic importance in the day. The Old Town is well preserved, and it is a UNESCO Heritage Site.
