Rothenburg, Germany: Burg Gate

There are a number of entrances to the old city in Rothenburg. This might be the best one.

The Berg Gate is on the northwest corner of the complex. The oldest part of the complex is a prison, built in 1400. There are two guard houses, shown here, on either side of the opening. They went up in the 16th century. Apparently there was a little peephole, so that spotted enemies that come to the door could be drenched with hot tar. That's a way to keep unwanted guests away.

Even better, there are attractions in the other direction from this photo's angle. There is a nice garden nearby, plus a viewpoint that has a great view of a slope leading away from the old town as well as a distant view of the southwest part of the town.
