Helsinki, Finland: Sibelius Monument

You try to do something a little different, and you get criticized.

That's a moral of this story of a monument to Jean Sibelius, one of Finland's greatest composers.

Sibelius died in 1957, and it took 10 years to come up with a tribute that could be placed in one of Helsinki's parks. Eila Hiltunen designed the monument, which supposedly represents sound waves and is constructed with empty cylinders that look like organ pipes. This was all a little too abstract for most people, so another sculpture that featured the composer's face was placed nearby.
