Barcelona, Spain: Fossar de les Moreres

This is a little spooky - this part of Spain honors its dead from a famous moment in history on a September 11.

The version in Barcelona took place in 1714 in the War of Spanish Succession. Defenders of the city were buried on this spot after a siege. The dead are buried under the plaza, while an eternal flame (the red, tall object) looks on and a poem about the victims is inscribed.

Catalonia lost some of its independence in that action. Since September 11 is the National Day of Catalonia, a ceremony is held on this spot each year.

The red "pole" shown in the photo has this inscription: "To those who died defending the rights and constitution of Catalonia in the siege of Barcelona (1713-1714)." It comes in several language, including English.

By the way, the square is bordered by the Santa Maria del Mar, which was built in a mere 44 years in the 1300s.
