Barcelona, Spain

The first thing to know about Barcelona is that it's a great place to walk.

That's not a small item. There's a great vitality on the streets, with plenty of people around. The architecture is terrific, forcing people to have their heads up half the time.

Certainly visitors notice something about the street layout immediately. The corners are cut off, so that intersections look like an imperfect octagon. An example of that is shown here. There must be some oddly shaped rooms in this building. It's a little tough navigating the streets in such situation, but you get used to it.

Maybe the geography provides some vitality. Barcelona has mountains on one side and water on the other. There's not much room, relatively speaking. So people are more or less packed together, and have to learn to deal with it.

It's interesting to know that Barcelona wasn't really much of a city around 1850. You'd never guess that it was going to be a world-class area. But it went on something of a redevelopment plan around then, and it worked quite well. Another building took place during the Olympics. Many factories lined the waterfront before 1992, but they got kicked inland and replaced by parks, new buildings, etc. It's all worked well.

We saw a lot in Barcelona in a couple of days, and we hardly hit everything. Next time, we find the fountain shown in the video.
