Such churches usually have a long history, and this is rather typical. It was founded in the 600s and reorganized in the 900s. The city was caught up in a fight after the death of William the Conqueror in 1087, and the Abbey was caught up in the middle of it. (The history was really, really complicated, as far as I can tell.) The structure received major rebuilds in the 1100s and 1500s. The current building took shape after a major project in the 1860s. A monastery was part of the complex at times, but that went away in 1539.
We only saw the outside of the Abbey, which was quite impressive.
