For starters, it is 220 years old. It opened in 1805 with a Shakespeare play, of course. It's gone through the usual amount of major renovations over the years, including one after a fire in 1862. (There's always a fire somewhere/sometime.) Stars like Sarah Bernhardt and John Gielgud have performed there over the years.
It seats 900 in a relatively small town, so it's been a little tough to keep an old place like this (with the usual repairs) open. A trust took it over in 1979, and a 120-seat theatre - called the Ustinov Studio - was added in 1997.
The video is a plug for a performance in 2021, but at least you get to see the inside.
