Caernarfon, Wales: Caernarfon Castle

This certainly makes a strong statement about what and who is in charge of the waterfront.

Caernarfon Castle has been around in one form or another since 1090s, although King Edward I decided to replace the original with a stone fortress. It was finished in 1283. The buidling was the center of government activity in North Wales at the time, so everything was built nice and big to hold it all. Stone walls were put up around it to add to the defensive structure. It must have looked good when finished in 1830.

It all fell into disrepair for a while, but eventually people realized what a unique place they had in their front yard. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's the place where Prince Charles became the Prince of Wales in 1969.

A restoration began in 2023, and considerable progress supposedly has been made. Access has been improved, and many more rooms have been opened to the public. It's become a nice economic engine for Caenarfon.
