George is the only person who became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to have Welsh as his first language. He was Welsh through and through, even though he was born in England. (Care to guess who the identity of the only Prime Minister to be born in the United States? Boris Johnson.)
Getting back to George, he helped win World War I as the PM during those years. That will get you a statue or six.
George was Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922. He was always progressive in his thinking and first won election to Parliament in 1890. That starts a 55-year run in that chamber. George took over running the government in the middle of the war, and helped bring it to a successful conclusion. From there he was part of the peace process in Paris, which certainly was a crucial moment in world history ... even if the result came out rather flawed for all concerned. George eventually lost his job as Prime Minister, but still was a key member of the government until his death in 1945.
George was described as a "lifelong Welsh nationalist," although his focus changed to cover all of the United Kingdom as his career advanced. Historians disagree on his legacy, but he and Winston Churchill rank at the top of any ranking of important Prime Ministers in the 20th century.
