Construction on the new place started in 1999, a blink of an eye ago as these things happen. The area was the former home of a brewery, and near the Palace of Hollyroodhouse. The new digs were open for business in 2004. It cost 10 times what the highest estimate of the construction costs would be, checking in at more than 414 million pounds.
But even so, the finished product generally was a success. It was supposed to be a meeting of culture, landscape and people, and some thought it did that quite nicely.
The public is invited to drop in at almost any time, which is nice enough. There are tours for people and groups, but an individual can walk in the front door and look around. You can even go to the gift shop and buy a special brand of Parliament whiskey. Well, it is Scotland.
