King Charles spends a week each year in Scotland, tending to official duties and hosting events. This becomes his headquarters. Then when he's gone, the buildings are open to the public and revert to tourist attraction status.
There's plenty of history in the place. King George V lived there, as did Mary,. Queen of Scots. The Queen's Gallery contains a nice collection of important paintings from some Old Masters. Don't take photos on the inside; that's not allowed.
The Holyrood Palace is at the end of the Royal Mile at the bottom of the hill. There's a tea room and a gift shop, of course, and plenty of gardens.
