Bay of Kotor, Montenegro: Submarine Base

As tourist attractions go, this is an odd one. Not too many people have been to an abandoned submarine base.

These were created in the 1950s. Yugoslavia wanted a place where it could hide some of its naval forces, and constructed a few such bases fairly close to the Adriatic Sea. Fake rocks were used to disguise the area from enemy boats. The ships didn't see any action during its days of operation, and eventually they fell by the wayside when Yugoslavia did the same as a country.

The good news is that it's possible to see the tunnels. Guided tours from the cities of the area, including Kotor take tourists out there for a look around. Boats go by the area, of course, so at least you can see the outside of the facility if you know it is coming.

The video takes a good-sized look at the entire bay, including the bases.
