Dubrovnik, Croatia: Rector's Palace

Care to make a grand entrance? The stairs in the Rector's Palace do the job nicely.

As the title suggests, this is where the Rector of the Republic of Regusa lived and worked for about 500 years (1300s to 1800s). It also held a prison, armory and powder magazine. Sounds like the city put it the structure to good use.

This used to be the place for a defense building, but a fire took care of that in 1435. Dubrovik kept rebuilding it, and something kept knocking it down - mostly earthquakes.

The office was taken over the History Department of Dubrovnik's museum in 1872. There are some nice displays inside. Be sure to take a close look at the railings on the stairs, which are held in place by "hand" or "fist" shapes.
