Kotor, Montenegro: Clock Tower

It wouldn't be a city along the Adriatic Sea without some walls around it, and Kotor is no exception. The area offers a particularly interesting welcome to visitors with an ancient clock tower just inside the main gate.

This went up in 1602, and is made of stone. The clocks do work, chiming on the hour. One of the most interesting parts of the tower's history centers around an earthquake. The 1667 quake gave the building a bit of a lean, sort of like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Repairs were made to keep it upright.

But that's not the best part. One source said that an earthquake in 1979 actually pushed the building back to its original position. After more than 300 years, the building was where it started.

Here's a quick look at the tower and surrounding square.
