Rothenburg, Germany

The old cities of Germany tend to blend together to a certain extent. They are all on the cute side, of course, and fun to walk around.

Rothenburg is one of them, and it seems like the biggest tourist area of all of them. Yes, it is charming and authentic and all that. But the place is crawling with tour groups, and it's a little distant from the city's actual business even if real people do live and work there. In other words, it seemed a little Disney-like. That's not necessarily bad, but may not be for every taste.

This used to be an important city around 800 years ago, put right in the middle of what is now south-central Germany. But the Thirty Years' War and an epidemic took care of any aspirations for greatness that the town had. It's a good place for a visit; you are sure to like the Marketplace shown above.
