Atlanta, Georgia: Mercedes-Benz Stadium

If you're going to spend a billion dollars on a stadium, you might as well make it a bit distinctive. Atlanta succeeded in that goal - despite going over budget in the process.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017, and it has a unique look to it. The building, which replaced the Georgia Dome, has a retractable dome. The roof, therefore, has something of a pinwheel design, as the panels move in order to cover or uncover the field. The roof can be left open during a light rain, as the electrical equipment is designed for that.

The stadium kept college football in mind during construction, as a couple of the locker rooms are extra big to handle the larger roster sizes there. It also can be adapted for soccer quite easily. The field surface can be expanded, and the seating capacity can be reduced by almost half.

It was mighty quiet here during our March visit. But the convention center nearby looked quite impressive in its reflection off the stadium.
