Chester, England: Janya the Elephant

You have to admit, you don't see many baby elephants in the middle of a decent-sized city. Janya certainly will make a visitor take a look.

Janya is a statue. It was a gift from the Chester Zoo to the city to celebrate the relationship between the two. Janya means "life" in Hindi, in case you were wondering. Annette Yarrow - who grew up in India in the 1930s and 1940s - gets the credit for the art work; the detail is quite nice.

Since it's in the middle of downtown, it receives plenty of attention. You can pet Janya for good luck if you'd like.
