Dubrovnik, Croatia: Monument of Poet Ivan Gundulić

A poet takes the proverbial spotlight in a nice little square within the walled city. Ivan Gundulic was a famous Baroque poet from the early 17th century. His most famous work is an epic poem called "Osman." Scenes from that poem supposedly are depicted on the base of the statue, which was first put on public display on July 26, 1893.

That day became relatively famous in this part of the world. The unveiling was something of a flashpoint in the midst of some heated political times between the Croats and the Serb-Catholics. Both sides tried to pack the square with supporters as a demonstration of political strength. Few things are easy in this part of the world at times.

Gundulic doesn't have the spotlight to himself there. This is the setting for a popular market, so the area around the statue is often crowded with vendors and food such as fruits and vegetables. Then at night, the square is the setting for some musical performances.
